“I was engaged to someone else for a brief moment and when I say brief moment, I mean like for thirty minutes.”

His face filled with curiosity, wonderment, and confusion. I sat him down so that I could clarify the entire Grant situation. After I had finished, he wiped imaginary sweat from his face. From his actions, I automatically assumed that we could move past the drama but his next words came as a shock.

“Paulette, I think it is best that I leave.”

“Warren…”

“No, let me finish,” he interrupted. “You need to work on you because you are all over the place.”

I held back my tears as I watched him walk past me and into the bedroom. He returned minutes later with his bags. I was motionless and speechless. He dialed a number from his cell.

“Yes, I need a cab, please.”

My heart dropped into my stomach.

“Warren, can we just talk about this?”

“Paulette, there’s nothing to talk about. It’s like you’re searching to fill a void and we both know what that void is. You have to deal with you and your situation before you can be happy and content with someone else and frankly, I’m not going to let you use me as a temporary fix to your problem.”

His words hurt like hell, but he was right.

“Warren, I’m not using you.”

“You may not think that you are, but you are.”

We sat in silence for about ten minutes.

“I need to tell you something else.”

“I’m listening, but I am sure it won’t make me stay.”

“Darryl really hurt me a few days ago.”

“What did he do?”

“I had to get stitches in my butt.”

“What?!”

“I guess he was upset about Grant and he sort of forced himself on me and as his anger built up, he forced himself inside of…”

“Stop it, please! I can’t listen to any more of that! You need to get rid of that son-of-a-bitch completely before he seriously hurts you or someone seriously hurts him.”

I took a deep breath when I heard a horn blow outside. He opened the door and waved.

“That’s my cab, Paulette.”

He picked up his bags.

“Warren, please stay.”

“Paulette, I can’t. I don’t want to see you hurt anymore and I don’t want to be hurt again. Only you can help you. I can’t do it for you especially since you don’t seem to want it.”

He pecked me on the forehead and walked out. I closed the door, ran to my room and collapsed on the bed. There was no need for me to shed any tears over the truth, so I didn’t. I went to sleep.
